The Age Insurers Stop Selling: What Nobody Checks Before Moving

Insurance is the one part of moving abroad where waiting a year can close a door permanently. Almost nobody checks it first.

People research visas for eight months and insurance in an afternoon. It should be the other way round.

A visa requirement you miss this year you can meet next year. An insurance door that closes on a birthday does not reopen.

Why premiums step rather than rise

Private cover abroad is not priced on a smooth curve. It is banded, and the bands are usually five years wide. Crossing from one band to the next can add a large percentage in a single renewal, and the step somewhere between 60 and 70 is the one that most often ends a plan.

Beyond a certain age, several insurers stop writing new policies altogether. Existing policyholders are renewed; new applicants are declined. That is the asymmetry worth understanding: buying early is not just cheaper, it is sometimes the only way in.

Where it matters most

The countries where the public system has real reach are the ones where a declined private policy hurts least. The countries below have a high out-of-pocket share, which means the cost of care falls on individuals rather than on a system.

CountryOut of pocket / yearOut-of-pocket share
Cambodia$21260.6%
Guatemala$53557.2%
Sri Lanka$27854.8%
Albania$70748.3%
Philippines$24944.4%
India$15243.9%
Mexico$56441.2%
Panama$1,34240.5%
Viet Nam$27039.2%
Morocco$22637.3%
Malaysia$53537.1%

How to get a real number in an afternoon

Quotes are free and the process is quicker than people assume. Approach four insurers with the same four questions: what is the monthly premium at my current age, what is it at 70, at what age do you stop accepting new applicants, and what is excluded for pre-existing conditions.

The fourth question is the one that produces the surprises. A policy that looks affordable often achieves it by excluding exactly the things a person over 60 is most likely to need.

The visa angle

Several residence routes require health cover as a condition of the visa, and not every policy qualifies. Travel insurance is not residence-grade cover, and consulates reject policies with deductibles, repatriation exclusions or annual caps below their threshold.

So the insurance question is not only about money. In those countries it is a gate on the visa itself.
