Most "best countries" lists rank the view. This one ranks what holds up in a bad year (safety, crime, water, food, energy and political stability), then five measures of a good one: economy, culture, nature, English and investment. Sixty countries, one score out of 100 each.

Every score comes from a public source: the Global Peace Index 2026, FAO and FAOSTAT, the World Bank, the IMF and UNESCO. The method for each column is in the spreadsheet.

How to use it

The ranking you see first gives every measure the same weight. That's rarely how a person decides: someone retiring on a fixed income cares more about stability and energy prices than about investment growth. The spreadsheet has a row of weights above the table. Change them and your own score recalculates, then sort by it.

Read the bad-year columns as a stress test, not a forecast. A country that imports most of its food and fuel isn't a bad place to live, but it is more exposed when prices jump, and that shows up in a retiree's budget first.

What it leaves out

Climate risk, safety at the level of a city or neighborhood, healthcare and the cost of living aren't in this ranking. For costs and healthcare by country, the country guides and the free Social Security purchasing-power and healthcare cost spreadsheets cover what this one doesn't.
