Working Remotely from Bali: The Visa, and What It Actually Costs

What the remote work route into Bali requires, and what your income is actually worth once you are living on it.

The visa

For Bali, the requirement is no dedicated visa yet — the B211a route allows 60 days plus two extensions, 180 days maximum.

What your money is worth there

Against Indonesia price levels, $2,086 a month has the purchasing power of $6,479, a multiplier of 3.11.

Monthly incomeWhat it is worth in Bali
$2,086$6,479
$3,000$9,318
$5,000$15,550

Healthcare

Residents pay $129 a year out of pocket, 31.1% of all health spending. Total spending runs $417 per person.

As a foreigner on a remote work visa you are buying private cover, which is priced separately and rises steeply with age. The figures above describe the price environment, not your premium.

Tax residency, which costs more than the visa

Most countries treat 183 days in a calendar year as the point at which you become tax resident. Cross it and you may owe tax locally on worldwide income, while the United States keeps taxing you as a citizen regardless of where you live.

A treaty usually prevents paying the full amount twice, but it does not remove the filing, and the filing is not simple. This is the part worth paying a professional for before the move rather than after it.

The catch worth knowing first

Indonesia has no dedicated digital nomad visa yet. The B211a route works, but it is a visit permit with a hard ceiling of 180 days, which makes it a stay rather than a move.

Thresholds move every January because most of them are pegged to an index that is revised annually. Treat the figure as the shape of the requirement and confirm the current number with the consulate before you file.
